چکیده

We study a class of quantum measurement models. A microscopic object is entangled with a macroscopic pointer such that a distinct pointer position is tied to each eigenvalue of the measured object observable. Those different pointer positions mutually decohere under the influence of an environment. Overcoming limitations of previous approaches we (i) cope with initial correlations between pointer and environment by considering them initially in thermal equilibrium, (ii) allow for object-pointer entanglement and environment-induced decoherence of distinct pointer readouts to proceed simultaneously, such that mixtures of macroscopically distinct object-pointer product states arise without intervening macroscopic superpositions, and (iii) go beyond the Markovian treatment of decoherence. Anomalous lack of decoherence of the macroscopic quantum superpositions based on phase-covariant quantum cloning.

We show that all macroscopic quantum superpositions (MQS) based on phase-covariant quantum cloning are characterized by an anomalous high resilence to the decoherence processes. The analysis supports the results of recent MQS experiments and leads to conceive a useful conjecture regarding the realization of complex decoherence-free structures for quantum information, such as the quantum computer.

Macroscopic superpositions via nested interferometry: finite temperature and decoherence considerations

Recently, there has been much interest in optomechanical devices for the production of macroscopic quantum states. Here we focus on a proposed scheme for achieving macroscopic superpositions via nested interferometry. We consider the effects of finite temperature on the superposition produced. We also investigate in detail the scheme’s feasibility for probing various novel decoherence mechanism...

Macroscopic Coherence for a Trapped Electron

One of the fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics is the exsistence of interfertence among quantum states which signs the difference between a superposition of states and a mixture of states. However, as soon as the superposition principle is extended to the macroscopic world the Schrödinger’s cat paradoxe [1] arises. Practically the visibility of such curious superposition states at macrosco...

Rogue decoherence in the formation of a macroscopic atom-molecule superposition

We theoretically examine two-color photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on the role of rogue decoherence in the formation of macroscopic atom-molecule superpositions. Rogue dissociation occurs when two zero-momentum condensate atoms are photoassociated into a molecule, which then dissociates into a pair of atoms of equal-and-opposite momentum, instead of dissociating back to...

This introduction to the theory of decoherence is aimed at readers with an interest in the science of quantum information. In that field, one is usually content with simple, abstract descriptions of non-unitary “quantum channels” to account for imperfections in quantum processing tasks. However, in order to justify such models of non-unitary evolution and to understand their limits of applicabi...
